Reflections of Training Methods

Building a muscular, lean and strong body is cool. It epitomises discipline, effort, consistency and sacrifice. Vertues that resonate with me.

But, in my eyes, building a beautiful sports car with a Nissan Micra engine, is pointless.

I used to think I wanted the sports car, so everyone would stare and admire it and I'd revel in their admiration, feeling like a king.

But, as I get older, I think I'd rather have a finely tuned, high performance engine in a car that maybe didn't look as good or as cool.

Now, obviously, I'm not just talking about cars.

The virtues I mentioned earlier still resonate profoundly with me. But, where I apply them has certainly changed.

I used to spend my time trying to build the perfect body, using a combination of weight training and dietary manipulation strategies, without spending any time to work on improving the functionality of my body. I'd become this muscular and strong being, but at the expense of being immobile, unfit and unhealthy.

One method thrives on external validation and vanity, and the other thrives on internal validity, health and self development.

Now, whilst my ego still checks in from time to time and judges how I look, I'm much more contented knowing that I'm developing of my hybrid performance, becoming more rounded, mobile, happier and healthier in the process.

Whatsmore, I've now given myself a never ending goal to aim for. Something I can work on for life and fall in love with the process along the way.

Who knows, I may even be able to keep my ego in check and achieve a half decent body in the process. From what I've seen in others, hybrid training seems to do wonders for the physique.
